Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any concerns regarding your child’s development, do not wait. Act early. Research has shown that early intervention makes a dramatic difference in children from birth to 4 years of age. The brain is most flexible in younger children and yields a tremendous amount of progress by the time they enter kindergarten. Early intervention may even reduce the need for intensive support later on.

At BE, we ensure that each child’s family receives an individualized monthly program with specific goals. This helps parents also follow up the same at home and in the community. We also have an open door policy, which means that you can always speak to our Centre manager or Program Director regarding your child’s progress at any time.
  • The number of hours of ABA/Speech/OT required in a week depends on a number of factors, such as the child’s age & skill level.
  • After the initial assessment, the BCBA, BCaBA, Speech therapist or Occupational therapist will recommend the required hours of ABA/Speech/OT appropriate to meet the developmental & educational needs of your child.
  • Most resources and treatment materials are supplied by BE for all centre-based services & by school or the therapist for all school-based services.
  • However, parents may choose to purchase specific learning aids (i.e., flash cards Level 1, 2 and/or 3, as recommended), in order to keep these personalized for each child.
  • Parents may store these learning aids at our centre/school, or take these home at the end of each session.
  • With intensive intervention, therapy can greatly help children make meaningful changes in several skill areas.
  • The number of years of therapy required is dependent on various factors such as age, no. of hours of therapy provided per week (the more intensive, the better), parent training, level of functioning, etc.
  • Research has consistently shown that when parents are involved and are trained in ABA & speech processes, outcomes are more positive & efficient.
  • While the child may spend a few hours a day in therapy, the rest of the time is spent at home, school & the community. Thus, it is very important that skills taught during the sessions are generalised in all environments.
  • Effective generalisation requires the cooperation of parents, caregivers as well as the learning support assistant/shadow teacher.
  • At BE, we involve the parents in the sessions regularly.
  • Parents can observe the session weekly and ask any questions or clarifications during the last 10 minutes so as to not interrupt the session.
  • We also provide free parent training each month for our parents to attend.
  • Parents find the training extremely useful as this helps them be more involved in their child’s progress and they are able to apply these principles to help their children effectively.

During the first few sessions, the parent will be required to remain in the centre as the child may also feel anxious in a new environment. However, once the child has settled in, your presence may not be required during the sessions.
